Zeniba found it odd that morning when she was up making her tea and No-Face didn't come down from the attic to join her. He was usually an early riser and seemed to enjoy the quiet of early morning as much as she did. They often spent the time savoring tea and just enjoying one another's company.
"Maybe he's not feeling well today," Zeniba sighed, settling down at her table, "He seemed a little depressed last night, the poor dear."

No-Face began his journey on the little dirt road that linked Zeniba's home to the train station in Swamp Bottom. As he passed under the archway that spanned the entrance to her property, the lantern was dark and all was quiet, but as he passed under the arch, the lantern awakened and hopped down from its place, lighting itself and landing in front of No-Face with an inquisitive squeak. No-Face naturally startled; he was already jumpy trying to slip away without Zeniba knowing. Once he recovered, he made a slight bow of greeting to the friendly little lantern, then he pointed up the road and moved softly by to continue on his way

Prologue
'She didn't even say goodbye.'
No-Face watched silently waving as the first person to show him kindness flew away with her dragon friend Haku. He couldn't call out to her. He had no voice with which to call. She probably wouldn't even hear the soft sounds he could make; not that he could make them anyway. He had a lump in his throat watching her go.
"Come now, No-Face," Zeniba beckoned him back inside once Chihiro and Haku had disappeared. "You must be tired after your journey. Let's see if we can fix a place for you to sleep."
No-Face was tired. Zeniba had no idea really. He had not had a very good day at all. He had gone crazy
